Paperclip switch for a simple electric circuit

Make a simple switch from paperclips and foil for a circuit with an LED and a coin cell.

Difficulty
◆ easy

What you need

  • cardboard
  • paperclips
  • binder clips
  • aluminium foil
  • 3 V coin cell
  • LED
  • scissors
  • pliers

How to do it

  1. Place paperclips on the cardboard as arms and fix them with binder clips.
  2. Fold the second arm over so that both arms touch. This closes the circuit.
  3. Roll aluminium foil into strings, pull each end through the lower end of a paperclip and press it tight with the pliers.
  4. Build the switch into the circuit with the coin cell and LED, at any point in the circuit.

Variations

  • Push switch (the paperclip closes the circuit only while pressed) and toggle switch.
