Keep a battery at about 40 percent during long storage

When you won't use a battery for a long time, charge it to about 40 percent and store it somewhere cool.

How to do it

  1. Charge the battery to about 40 percent before storing it, unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
  2. Store it in a cool place.
  3. Top it up about every six months so it doesn't fall below 40 percent.

Why it works

During long periods of non-use, a battery loses roughly ten percent per month. A charge level that is too low can lead to deep discharge.

Variations

  • The manufacturer's instructions come first. The 40 percent figure is a starting point when there is no manufacturer advice.
