Set chain tension at the rear hub: centre the wheel, tighten the axle last

Set bike chain tension at the rear hub: centre the wheel and tighten the axle last.

Time
⏱ 10 min
Difficulty
◆ medium

What you need

  • 15 mm open-end or ring spanner (for standard hubs)

How to do it

  1. Check the chain tension.
  2. Loosen the rear axle, with a 15 mm spanner on standard hubs.
  3. Slide the rear wheel in the dropouts until the chain has the right tension.
  4. Centre the rear wheel.
  5. First tighten the wheel “more than finger-tight”.
  6. If the chain runs easily over chainring and sprocket, tighten the axle fully. If it moves only with force, loosen the axle slightly and give some slack.
