Spoke rule for wheel wobble: tighten the opposite side in quarter turns
Fix wheel wobble: tighten the spokes on the opposite side in quarter turns and check after each step.
- Time
- ⏱ 30 min
- Difficulty
- ◆ hard
What you need
- Spoke wrench that fits the nipple size
How to do it
- Find the spot where the wobble is.
- If the rim pulls to the right, tighten the spokes that go to the left hub flange (non-drive side). If it pulls to the left, tighten the spokes to the right flange (drive side).
- Tighten in quarter turns and check the wobble each time.
- If a spoke is very hard to turn, first loosen the neighbouring spokes on the opposite side a little.
Why it works
This spoke tension pulls the rim outwards and towards the hub from both sides at once, which gives the wheel great stiffness.
Variations
- With disc brakes, 1 mm of lateral wobble is no big deal. Rim brakes need an almost perfectly straight rim, otherwise the brake pulsates.
