Shaker cans: guess the contents by sound
Fill cans with different contents and guess them, or find the matching one, by shaking alone.

What you need
- Opaque cans, such as film canisters
- Fillings such as rice, sand, sugar
- For the mystery can: an opaque can, everyday objects or toys
How to do it
- Fill cans with different things and close them.
- Either: two cans hold the same filling, and the owners find each other by shaking only.
- Or: everyone writes down what they think is in their can.
- Reveal the contents and compare.
Variations
- Filling two cans with the same things makes it harder.
- For small children, banging objects together under the table is enough.
- Mystery can “What’s rattling?”: a single object sits in an opaque can, and the child guesses the contents by shaking only. With a correct answer, they hide an object themselves, then the next player guesses.
