Cross-ventilation through two opposite windows

Opening windows on opposite sides at the same time swaps the air in a room much faster.

Time
⏱ 5–10 min
Difficulty
◆ easy

How to do it

  1. Open windows on opposite sides of the building at the same time.
  2. Air briefly, with 5–10 minutes as a guideline, as with shock ventilation.
  3. Close the windows again afterwards.

Why it works

Air exchange becomes much greater when windows on opposite sides are open at the same time.

Variations

  • In summer, only cross-ventilate when it is cooler outside than inside.
  • A door on the opposite side also works as the second opening.
  • For a good air exchange in hot weather, at least about 20 minutes are suggested.
  • Secure the windows against slamming beforehand.
