What you need

  • Sewing thread
  • Needle
  • Button
  • Matchstick or toothpick

How to do it

  1. Sew the button on as usual, but don't pull the thread fully tight.
  2. Slide a matchstick or toothpick between the button and the fabric, then carefully between the two threads.
  3. Wind the thread around the stitches under the button, remove the spacer and knot the thread.

Variations

  • The spacer is especially useful on shirts and blouses made of fine fabric.
