EverydayTried-and-true tip
Read dense texts in five steps (SQ3R)
Read dense nonfiction in five steps: survey, question, read, recite, review.
- Time
- ⏱ 30–45 min pro Kapitel
- Difficulty
- ◆ medium
What you need
- Text
- Pen
- Notepaper
How to do it
- Survey: skim headings, figures and summaries.
- Question: turn the headings into questions.
- Read: read with purpose and look for the answers to your questions.
- Recite: give the answers in your own words without the text.
- Review: go over the material again later.
Variations
- PQ4R for dense specialist texts, an extension of SQ3R: Preview (skim the text, read the introduction and conclusion), Question (ask who, what, when, where, why), Read (go section by section, look for answers, note key points in the margin), Reflect (link what you read to what you already know), then Recite and Review. The extra step connects new material with what you already know. It suits exam preparation with specialist texts.
