Mental route with stations for memorising a list

The method of loci helps you remember lists by attaching items to stations along a route you know well.

How to do it

  1. Choose a route you know very well, such as your way to school or your own home.
  2. Set stations along the route.
  3. Link each item to a station with an image that is as vivid and odd as possible.
  4. To recall, walk the route in your mind.

Variations

  • If the route is hard to picture, draw it as a map of a town or a room and mark the items at distinctive points.
  • Body list: use body parts as fixed stations instead of places, for example feet, legs, stomach, hands, shoulders, neck, mouth, nose and eyes. To recall, start at the head and go in a fixed order. One example is the ten largest countries in the right order.
