Take-away game: two players, one heap of sticks

A two-player game with pebbles or sticks: take turns removing them until none are left.

Difficulty
◆ easy

What you need

  • Pebbles, marbles, toothpicks or similar

How to do it

  1. Lay the pebbles out as a triangle: row by row, each row with one pebble fewer than the one below.
  2. On your turn, take either one pebble or a whole row from a single row.
  3. Whoever takes the last pebble wins or loses. Agree on this beforehand.
  4. Extension: set a maximum number per turn. Removing pebbles creates new rows to the left and right, which are then treated separately.
