OutdoorsTried-and-true tip

Marking an east-west line from a stick's shadow ends

Two shadow marks about 20 minutes apart give you a rough east-west line.

Time
⏱ 25 min
Difficulty
◆ medium

What you need

  • stick
  • stone or twig for marking
  • sun

How to do it

  1. Push a stick upright into the ground.
  2. Mark the tip of its shadow.
  3. Wait about 20 minutes.
  4. Mark the shadow tip again.
  5. The line between the marks shows east-west roughly. North-south runs at a right angle to it.

Variations

  • A half-circle variant with a string is more accurate but needs a clear sky.
