Leaning trees reveal the prevailing wind

Lone trees can give you a rough clue about direction, because the prevailing west wind shapes them.

How to do it

  1. Find a free-standing tree.
  2. Check its lean: does the crown point east?
  3. Compare the sides: the east side is often more sheltered and denser, the west side barer and more crooked.
  4. Treat it as a rough hint only, not a compass substitute.
