If-then plan to start studying

An if-then plan ties your study intention to a specific situation so you follow through more easily.

What you need

  • Pen and paper, or a note on your phone

How to do it

  1. Set a concrete study goal.
  2. Decide on a place and a time.
  3. Write one sentence: “If [situation], then [specific action]”.
  4. Put the sentence where you will see it at your study spot.

Why it works

An implementation intention fixes when, where and how you act. That directs your attention toward the goal and away from other things.

Variations

  • Make several if-then plans for different obstacles, for example for when your phone rings.
