Find Polaris using the pointer stars

Find Polaris, the North Star, by following the two pointer stars of the Big Dipper.

How to do it

  1. Find the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) in the sky.
  2. Spot Merak and Dubhe, the two stars at the outer edge of the bowl.
  3. Extend a line through them beyond the bowl. Polaris lies in that direction.

Why it works

Merak and Dubhe are called the pointer stars because they point towards Polaris.

Variations

  • When the Big Dipper is in its autumn position, the W-shaped Cassiopeia can serve as a substitute.
