White and Black move in turn; White starts. Each piece moves its own way: the king one square, the queen any distance straight or diagonally, the rook straight, the bishop diagonally, the knight in an L-shape, the pawn one square forward (two from its starting square) and captures diagonally.
Special moves: castling (the king moves two squares towards a rook, which jumps over it), en passant (a pawn captures an enemy pawn that just made a double step beside it) and promotion (a pawn reaching the last rank becomes a queen, rook, bishop or knight).
The goal is checkmate: the enemy king is in check and cannot escape. The game is drawn by stalemate, insufficient material, threefold repetition or the fifty-move rule.
Controls: tap a piece – green dots show its moves, rings show captures – and tap the target. Against the AI and with two players you can take moves back.
