The game is played on the dark squares of an 8 × 8 board; each player has 12 pieces. White moves first. A piece moves diagonally one square forward.
If an opponent’s piece stands diagonally next to yours with a free square behind it, jump over it and capture it. If another jump is possible afterwards, it continues in the same move. In German draughts capturing is mandatory and men may also capture backwards; in the classic rules there is no forcing and men capture forwards only.
A piece that reaches the opponent’s back row becomes a crowned king. The king moves and captures across any number of free squares in all diagonals. Whoever has no move left – because all pieces are captured or blocked – loses.
You can choose German draughts (forced capture, men capture both ways, flying kings) or classic (no forcing, capture forwards only).
